Europe your way - Design your trip

We are all different and we all have different dreams. In this section, I hope to give you some tools to start designing the European flightless journeys that feel right for you.

I have never planned a flightless holiday to Europe. Where do I start?

It is a fair question. To make your planning easier, I have listed below the websites I use for booking my trips, from trusted companions such as TheManinSeat61 to ShowMetheJourney and Rome2Rio - the latter 2 give you the option of entering the departure and arrival stations, and will get you an extensive list of rail routes and itineraries for travelling by train within different European countries, to national railways and booking engines.

I prefer erring on the side of caution and always double-check information on the Trainline and the national railways websites, which is normally also a good way to spot any current or upcoming offers.

Many countries in Europe are taking steps to increase train travel options, and timetables are evolving all the time. Sometimes a combination of fast and slow services may give you additional stop-over options, or the best views from your window.

For example, direct trains from Paris to Barcelona will begin service in 2024. And Trenitalia is launching seasonal weekend night trains from Rome to the Cortina in the Dolomites.

Search the blog for updates on the opening of new routes.

I have put together a short European train travel for beginners post, and plan to write features on the different national rail operators and the types of trains in each country.
